Is there any way to create a trail ? I was thinking of something like this :
To do that, we'd need to be able to show/hide regions/meshes dynamically, depending on the frame. That would allow for a wide range of animation effects.
Do you plan to add this kind of feature in the future ?

This looks like an engine runtime feature. To make it solve your specific problem, I will investigate into this possibility when I get the cycles.
If you are on UE4, you can also somewhat have a similar effect with Flow FX in Creature ( since the UE4 runtime now has basic Flow support ). You can have fading particles that are emitted from your region mesh over time creating a fade trail.
